The Role

We’ve got an exciting opportunity for an Independent Living Officer to join our team based at Shoemaker Court and High Street South. Shoemaker court is a family scheme consisting of 16 apartments whereas High Street South is a 15-bed scheme for people aged 18 years and over that are homeless or in housing need.

In this varied role, you’ll work Monday to Friday across both sites on a 3-week rolling rota. The Schemes are located within walking distance from one-another and are well connected to the Town Centre and local bus routes.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Provide Housing-related support and guidance to customers who are facing homelessness
  • Assist residents to overcome any barriers to their own independent living and support the development of individuals so they can move into their own sustained tenancy
  • Arrange support meetings with residents and provide pro-active support to address said barriers
  • Refer cases to external agencies for specialist support when necessary
  • Monitor rent accounts: agree repayment plans and challenge non-payment
  • Support residents and promote engagement in meaningful activities
  • Maintain comprehensive records using Microsoft/in-house systems

As an Independent Living Officer, you will deal with people from all walks of life and as a visible member of the Midland Heart team, it is your job to help support them. You will get the chance to work closely with local agencies and authorities such as the Police Force or Local Council to help overcome any challenges you may face.

As an Independent Living Officer, you will have:

  • Passion and enthusiasm for providing support to vulnerable people
  • Knowledge of the welfare benefits system and issues relating to homelessness
  • Demonstrable experience of providing housing related support to customers with achieving effective outcomes
  • The ability to work with others in a fair and assertive manner, using your excellent communication skills, with a solution focussed outlook
