The Role

We are now looking for a committed and enthusiastic Homeless Prevention Officer to join our busy Housing Advice Team in Rushden, East Northamptonshire. The main focus of the role will be to prevent homelessness, and this will involve working with a number of agencies and customers. This role is a fixed term contract until the end of March 2019.

Reporting directly to the Senior Homeless Prevention Officer, the main duties of this role are; to work with customers to understand the housing market in the area, establish housing options and empower them to resolve their housing needs.  You will interview, advise and investigate approaches from persons presenting as homeless or threatened with homelessness and prevent this wherever possible. In cases of housing crisis and homelessness, you will work with customers to alleviate the situation and prevent homelessness wherever possible.

In order to be considered for this role, you must have up to date knowledge of relevant housing legislation, statutory guidance, case law and policy and practice. You will need to demonstrate a positive approach in seeking housing solutions including access to private sector accommodation, specialist housing and low cost home ownership. You will have proven negotiation and advocacy skills and be an excellent communicator who can deal with customers and third parties in an objective yet compassionate manner.

You will also need to have a good understanding of the housing issues facing a broad section of the community as well as knowledge of the complexity of problems people may have to overcome. You will need to be organised and methodical and have the confidence to work on your own initiative.
